Rude Tweets or Blogging Can Get You Sued

Stephen M. FellsThe following video from Chris Voss highlights an interesting question; just how much free speech protection is there for your online commentary?

Jay Thomson recently blogged about a $50,000 libel suit (also referred to in the video) filed against a Chicago based tenant by her management company. The suit related to the following tweet:

“Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it’s okay.”

This issue is a relatively new one but expect it to become more common. The UK legal system, while far from perfect, offers some protection to frivolous law suits (if you sue and lose you pay both parties legal costs) but that doesn’t exist here. Ultimately both sides end up spending a huge amount of time and money making attorneys rich. No matter what the end result it’s a stressful and often lengthy process; avoiding lawsuits is always preferable.

So I strongly recommend watching the following video if only to make you think. The next six minutes could save you a fortune.
